Handicrafts & foods

ChildWhen copper mining stopped at the end of the 19th century in Predoi, the village priest advised his ingenious parishioners to look for new sources of income.

And so they discovered the art of lace making, an art passed down from mothers to daughters through the generations still practiced today. The men turned their hands to wooden sculpture, doing particularly fine work carving the roots, and this became another handicraft typical of Predoi.

Farmers in Predoi have specialized in the production of organically raised foods like summer pasture cheese and “Graukäse” (Gray cheese), various types of sauerkraut, “speck” cured ham, and eggs that let people lead more natural lives while enjoying the fruits of nature.
